AzLA Letter to President Obama on the Librarian of Congress Appointment

Posted By Dan Stanton, Thursday, October 1, 2015

Dear Mr. President:

The Library of Congress is the nation’s preeminent institution for preserving and promoting the cultural record of the United States. The Librarian of Congress is a critical leadership position that promotes our democratic values, supports economic development, and facilitates equal access to information and knowledge in our everchanging world. You currently have the opportunity to name the next Librarian of Congress, and the Arizona Library Association adds its voice to the growing list of individuals and groups urging you to select a professional librarian, someone who can build from the nexus of community, culture, education, and innovation.

The library profession values diversity and inclusion as it seeks to provide access to resources and services for all. We are confident that you will find many diverse library leaders from which to choose and urge you to nominate a candidate who will seek to move us forward in the digital age without leaving any populations behind. This global enterprise can be led by the United States with the right librarian at the helm of the Library of Congress.

Most respectfully,

Dan Stanton
Arizona Library Association
