Opening Keynote Speaker: Thursday, October 19, 2023

Program Title: Cultivating Joy and Flourishing at Work: Saying no to good so you can say yes to great!

Description: Librarians are among the many employees today who are facing unprecedented challenges at work in terms of pandemic malaise, burnout, turnover, and increased scrutiny and pressure from a variety of external audiences. As such, it’s more important than ever to consider ways that employees can cultivate joy and flourishing at work for themselves and their teams. This talk focuses on four main ways to create flourishing – through sparking positive emotion, enhancing engagement, developing meaningfulness and sense of purpose, and building high quality relationships. What’s more, it discusses the somewhat counter-intuitive notion that flourishing requires people to set boundaries and essentially “say no to good to say yes to great.” Through sharing stories, examples, and research evidence, this talk offers practical implications that will inform the rest of the conference and can be immediately applied to the workplace.

Thursday's featured speakers are sponsored by the Arizona State Library, Archives & Public Records, a division of the Secretary of State, with federal funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
