Dr. Noah Lenstra

Dr. Lenstra is an Associate Professor of Library and Information Science in the School of Education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) where he brings a community organizing approach to the study and teaching of public librarianship. Notably, Noah founded the Let’s Move in Libraries Initiative, which focuses on supporting healthy living in public libraries. Let’s Move in Libraries continues Obama's legacy by working to increase physical activity and nutrition through libraries in the U.S., Canada, and other places in the world. Noah has a special interest in supporting healthy aging through public library partnerships, and he is an affiliated faculty member in the Gerontology Program at UNCG. He received a Master’s degree and a PhD in Library & Information Science from the University of Illinois.

Title: Let's Get Healthy Together

Description:

ALA Past President Loida Garcia-Febo says that "bringing wellness to library workers can also impact library patrons." Let’s discuss how to put this principle into practice. Since 2016, I've studied how public libraries support healthy living. Again and again, I've discovered that wellness initiatives focused on staff lead to wellness initiatives for patrons. Libraries that wish to contribute to healthy communities should invest in staff wellness. I’ll share with you what I’ve learned so that you can 1) advocate for the importance of workplace wellness, 2) try out these principles, based on the successes of other librarians, and 3) find the partners you will need to have long-term success. Let's get healthy, together!
